Metaverse Landscapes are UV-printed oil paintings depicting plots of land from various “metaverses,” from Decentraland to The Sandbox to Voxels and Somnium Space, following from the conventions these platforms uses to represent their land on marketplaces where it is bought and sold.
The paintings recall art historical idioms of colonial landscape painting and modernist abstraction – staging questions around how today’s rapidly evolving metaverses, or virtual universes, choose to represent themselves. Depicting these digital lands as they actually look in online marketplaces, the works foreground the ownership dynamics that are already playing out in this new realm of digital property.
Each Metaverse Landscape consists of a physical painting depicting a parcel of land from a given metaverse and a corresponding NFT Title Deed, which tracks the actual metaverse land token’s ownership, along with the ownership of the painting, in real time.
